Free Beginner Crochet Pattern: The Fireside Throw (With Video Tutorial)


Welcome to The Unique Sheep! I’m so excited to share my latest free crochet pattern: the Fireside Throw — a soft, cozy blanket designed especially for beginners. If you’ve never picked up a hook before, this is the perfect first project.
The Fireside Throw uses basic stitches in a rhythmic repeat, making it a relaxing and satisfying make. It’s warm, squishy, and easy to adjust for your desired length. Whether you’re curled up with a good book or binge-watching your favorite show, this throw is a comforting companion.
🧶 Materials:
- 7 Skeins Big Twist Living in Spirit (182 m / 110 g)
- Size 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook
- Large darning needle
📏 Gauge:
10 stitches x 17 rows = 4”
Finished size: 42” x 38” (easily adjustable)

Fireside Throw Pattern
Abbreviations (U.S. Terms):
Ch – chain
Sl – slip stitch
Tc – treble (triple) crochet
Sk – skip stitch
Foundation Row:
Ch 142.
In the 4th ch from hook, work 2 tc (the skipped 3 chains count as first tc).
Pattern repeat: (Sk 1 ch, sl st in next ch, sk 1 ch, 3 tc in next ch) — repeat across.
End with a sl st in final ch. (You will have 34 tc clusters and 34 sl sts.)
Ch 4 and turn.
Row 2:
Work 2 tc in the base of the turning ch (ch 4 counts as first tc).
Pattern repeat: (Sl st in center of tc cluster from previous row, sk next tc, 3 tc in next sl st) — repeat across.
Sl st in last st. Ch 4 and turn.
Repeat Row 2 until your throw reaches the desired length.
✂️ Finishing:
Use a tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends.
