How to Improve Your Crochet Foundation Chain with One Simple Trick

Have you ever started a crochet project, only to find that your foundation chain is too tight and your edges curl? It’s one of the most common frustrations for beginners—and even seasoned crocheters from time to time.
Luckily, there’s a super simple fix: just use a crochet hook that’s one size larger for your starting chain.
The Problem with Tight Foundation Chains
A tight foundation chain can:
- Cause your fabric to pucker or curl
- Make it hard to work your stitches into the chain
- Throw off the tension of your whole project
- This is especially noticeable in lace projects or pieces that need to lie flat, like scarves, table runners, or blankets.
The Easy Fix for Crochet FoundationChain: Use a Larger Hook
Here’s the tip: Use a crochet hook that’s one size larger than what your pattern calls for—just for the foundation chain. Then, once the chain is complete, switch back to your regular hook for the rest of the project.
This gives your chain a little more flexibility and makes it much easier to work into the stitches, especially if you’re a tight crocheter or just getting started.
Why It Works
Your chain needs to be just a little looser than the stitches that follow it. Using a larger hook creates a chain with more “give” without forcing you to consciously loosen your tension (which can be tough to do evenly).
This method works beautifully for:
- Shawls and scarves
- Lace patterns
- Projects where the starting edge is highly visible
- Any pattern where your chain seems to pull or shrink
